World Education Welcomes Antonia Powell as Executive Director

World Education has named Antonia Powell as Executive Director. The role will oversee the World Education portfolio of work improving lives through education, social and economic development with more than 500 employees in over 20 countries.

Antonia is a trusted and visionary leader with a deep understanding of how our work affects educational attainment and social mobility. We are delighted to welcome her to the new role,” said Hafiz Adamjee, Chair of the World Education Board of Trustees.

Powell comes to World Education from the JSI Center for HIV and Infectious Diseases where she served as co-director. She joined JSI in 2019, after almost 20 years of implementing large-scale public health programs in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Effective July 1, 2023, World Education is merging with JSI. The merger is an acknowledgement of the 30-year relationship between the affiliated organizations and will position both to better meet the needs of the communities served. Powell’s experience as a leader at JSI makes her uniquely positioned to manage the increased collaboration and administrative integration that will result from the formal merger.

Antonia is the right leader at the right time. She has a history of working across cultures and is deeply committed to improving lives and livelihoods. Her extensive background in program management, global development, and people and talent management will ensure World Education continues to be at the forefront of innovation and impact,” said Margaret Crotty, President and CEO of JSI.

Throughout my career, I have seen the real-world effect that evidence-informed development programs have on individuals and communities. I am humbled to join World Education and look forward to continuing to advance excellence through our programs in the U.S. and around the globe,” said Powell.

Since its founding in 1951, World Education has reduced disparities in education outcomes and strengthened safety net programs through programs to improve the quality of life and increase economic opportunities.

Powell begins her role as Executive Director effective May 2023.
