Literacy Assistance Center – Lead and Leadership: Public Health Lesson Sets for Mid- and Upper-Level ELLs

Description: This workshop is a presentation of Lead and Leadership, a new Study Guide for mid- and upper-level ESOL students on the theme of public health, created in collaboration between CUNY, the NYC Department of Health, and the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. The focus of the beautifully designed materials is lead poisoning prevention, and the language and concepts are relevant to public health more broadly. The lessons feature brief narrative and non-narrative readings and linked activities in a fillable PDF ready for use in synchronous or asynchronous classes online. The engaging stories, non-fiction readings and activities are also useful for teaching reading modalities and strategies.

About LAC: Since 1983, the LAC has been working to build the capacity and improve the quality of the Adult Basic Education (ABE), English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and High School Equivalency (HSE) programs that serve New York and the surrounding region’s most educationally disadvantaged and economically marginalized communities. Our staff has spent years in the field witnessing the power of literacy education to transform lives.
