IDENTIFYING IMPORTANT ISSUES

OBJECTIVE
Students will begin to reflect on what they want in a leader by identifying the three issues most relevant to their lives and by considering what they would like to see happen to address each issue.

DIRECTIONS
Begin by doing the following example on the board asking the class to help finish brainstorming solutions to the third issue. Students then identify their own issues and solutions using the outline provided. Students who finish early can begin to think about the specifics of each of their suggested solutions. For example, with respect to the issue of crime, what kind of laws should be passed to restrict the number of people who carry guns? What kinds of punishments would effectively inhibit people from selling guns illegally? When everyone has finished, students can share what they have written with each other.

EXAMPLES

Issue #1 Crime
1. Stricter laws about carrying guns
2. Trace guns that were sold illegally and punish the dealers
3. Give people who commit more than one crime longers sentences

Issue #2 Welfare
1. Women with children under two years of age should not work
2. Create more job training programs that will enable low income people to apply for higher paying jobs
3. Raise the minimum wage

Issue #3 Jobs
