Scrolling

The Scroll

Language Objectives:
Present vs.pPast tense
Computer Objectives: Scrolling
Language Level: High beginner to intermediate
Time: One-half hour
Computer Prerequisite: Double clicking, highlighting
Preparation:

Type a story or event in the present tense but could be changed to the past tense. For higher levels, include some difficult irregular verbs for review. Choose a large font. Make sure the document is longer than one screen so students can practice scrolling.

Place the document on each students' computer. For instructions how to do this, click here.

If students don't know how to open a document, you may want to do that for them in advance on their computers.

Activity
  • Demonstrate use of scrolling.
  • Have students highlight present tense words by double clicking on them, then type the appropriate past tense verb in its place. Students scroll down to complete making replacements.
  • Students can work in pairs or collaborate afterwards to see if they have the same results.
Variations:
  • Teacher can add other grammatical errors or punctuation mistakes for students to correct.
  • For very easy practice, try inserting a series of images with vocabulary. You can also go into clip art to have students see various images and have them orally identify them as a class or with a partner.
