Open and Close Windows

Quiz Show

Language Objectives:
Identifying common grammatical errors
Computer Objectives: Opening and closing windows
Language Level: Beginner to advanced
Time: One-half hour
Computer Prerequisite: Single and double clicking
Preparation:

Create two documents and type "Sorry. Try Again!" inside, and name each file with a different sentence using common errors that your learners make. (See illustration.) Next, create a third file and type CORRECT! inside, and name it with a sentence using correct grammar and sentence structure. (NOTE: Most word processing applications won't allow you to save a file with a question mark.) Place all three files inside a folder. You may want to name it with a grammar point that you want your students to work on, such as "Future Tense".You can set up more folders depending on the time available.

Put the folder on the students' desktops or have folder visible by displaying contents of disk. For instructions how to do this, click here.

Try it! Click on the correct sentence above!

Activity
  • Demonstrate to students how to open the folder by double clicking on it. (For those having trouble double clicking, they can single click on the folder and then press the Enter/Return key.)
  • Have students open the folder with the grammar point you are working on. Then discuss which document they believe has the correct grammar.
  • Students open the files until they find the correct one. It is important to allow students time to determine why the incorrect sentences are wrong.
Variations:
  • Instead of writing, "Sorry. Try again!" and "CORRECT!", insert these messages as a sound files using the computer's sound recorder. For instructions how to do this, click here.
  • Record the correct sentences on a sound recorder for students to practice grammar, pronunciation, or vocabulary.
  • Teach more advanced groups to create their own quizzes.
  • In a folder, have three files, each with a sound recording of different phrases, idioms, or sentences.
