Jeopardy

Language Objectives:
Question formation, discussion
Computer Objectives: Spell checking
Language Level: Beginner to advanced
Time: One-half hour
Computer Prerequisite: Open, close, clicking, double clicking
Preparation:

Create a folder..

Open a document. Type a question inside, such as, "Who was the first president of the United States?" Save this file as "George Washington", and place it in the folder.

Create three more documents, each with a different question typed inside and saved as the answer to the question inside. Place the documents inside the folder, as with the example below.

Place the folder on each students' computer. For instructions how to do this, click here.

  • Have the folder closed and visible to the students. It can be on the desktop or they can find it in Windows Explorer.

Three documents

Try it! Click on a document to see the correct question.

Activity
  • Have students locate and open the folder you created.
  • Have students point to the first file, but they should not open it yet. Say to the students, "The name of the file is the answer. What is the question?"
  • Students work in groups of at least two to write a possible question, and then report their questions to the class.
  • The class discusses which questions are correct and why. The teacher refrains from giving the answers until after they open the file.
  • Students then open the file to check their accuracy.
  • They close the file and go on to the next file.
Variations:
  • Students rewrite the correct questions on the board after they check.
  • Questions and answers appear on sound recorded files, and students practice pronunciation. For instructions how to do this, click here.
  • Students make up new answers and questions, and create their own Jeopardy game for another group.
