Spell Check

The Spelling Bee

Language Objectives:
Listening, vocabulary, spelling
Computer Objectives: Spell checking
Language Level: Literacy to advanced
Time: One-half hour
Computer Prerequisite: Click, Enter/Return key, open a document
Preparation:

Prepare a list of vocabulary that your class has been working on.

Make sure the spell checking feature is enabled on the computers.

Activity
  • Have students open a document.
  • Show the class how to access the spell check by clicking on the toolbar button.
  • As you read the words from your list, have students type them. Tell them to press the Enter key after they type each word in order to create a list.
  • After the students' lists are complete, tell them that words with red lines may be misspelled. Instruct each person to put the cursor on the misspelled words, and check the spelling using the spell checker by either right-clicking on the word or by using the Tools menu.
  • After students are finished, pass out copies of the word list so that they can make sure they chose the correct word from the spell check.
Variations:
  • Students dictate a short paragraph from a book or other source to each other and after spell checking, check their typed document against the text in the book.
  • Have students take turns saying their names for everyone to type. (If not already included, add a name that Spell check doesn't recognize.) After, they write their names on the board for everyone to check and correct. Likely Spell check will indicate some names as being incorrectly spelled. Have students notice that Spell check does not know all correctly-spelled words, and so they sometimes need to use other means to be sure that a word is incorrectly spelled.
