ConnectEd used a wide range of interventions to improve the lives of disadvantaged youth, but a key driver in moving forward was the use of technology. The ConnectEd program, a partnership between World Education and the Alcatel-Lucent Foundation, provided access to information and communication technology (ICT) to over 10,000 youth, trained over 300 teachers, and provided computers, tablets, and other ICTs in the five countries in which it functioned: Australia, Brazil, China, India, and Indonesia.

This paper summarizes the approaches used by ConnectEd in using ICT to bridge the digital divide and ensure all youth possess basic skills in digital literacy, improve the quality of education, improve preparation for the world of work, give youth a voice, give socially excluded girls access to education, improve program management, and as an entry point to Alcatel-Lucent volunteer engagement. The document also reviews lessons learned and key highlights from students involved in the program.
